Kellie was one of the most popular "American Idols", even though she wasn't a winner. Kellie Dawn Pickler was born Kellie Dawn Pickler on June 28, 1986 at Stanly Memorial Hospital in Albemarle to Cynthia Morton and Clyde Raymond Pickler. Her mother was barely 16 when she became pregnant with her. The childhood was difficult for Pickler due to her father's struggle in addiction with alcohol and drugs while her mother left her at the age of two. Morton returned to take her charge for a few years, but Pickler acknowledged that it was not all well. "I can remember when my mom as well as me in the kitchen and I said, 'I wish God would take me away, I'd much rather have my body taken away than to live alongside you.' She pulled out a knife, set it on the counter and said"Here's how to do it after that.' It was the fourth grade. Sure, I'd never have acted upon it and it's caused me quite a bit of emotional trauma," she said. Court eventually gave Pickler to her grandparents at the age of she was 12 and Morton didn't show for the trial. Pickler was raised by her grandparent's all through her entire life. They are cited as being the most influential individuals to influence her in the course of her life. Faye Pickler, the grandmother who took care of her, died of lung cancer in 2001. He continued to care for Pickler. Pickler was a graduate of North Stanly High School, located in New London (North Carolina).
